On 1/1/1940 the SR officially withdrew services north of Lyminge and handed the line over to Railway Operating troops. The WD undertook running of the daily goods train on behalf of the SR whose staff remained at all stations. In addition, the WD ran their own recreation trains on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The general public were allowed to ride on these trains at their own risk. The fare between Lyminge and Canterbury was 6d return.
