4LYNTON & BARNSTAPLE RAILWAY LUGGAGE LABELS: Type L131 on white paper “From ------ to Barnstaple GWR via GWR Loop”; type L132 on pink paper “From Lynton to Sherborne Via Barnstaple Town & LSWR”; type L133 on pink paper “From ------ to Bournemouth West Via Templecombe & Broadstone.” The first example is a little faded, the last example has a corner missing, good otherwise and extremely rare examples. 6BLACKBURN & OVER DARWEN TRAM CO. 1d pink named stage punch type TRAM TICKET from this 5 mile steam system that operated between 16/4/1881 and 16/10/1900. (1)£270
7ASHOVER LIGHT RAILWAY. A selection of unused Bell Punch singles consisting of 1d white (A1), 2d blue (B4), 3d orange (B4), 4d pink (C2), 5d green (A6) and the less common 8d (B9). When the line opened there were two series of single tickets – A and B. However, while all the tickets in this lot bear Bell Punch Uxbridge 3-25 imprints it is known that the 2d B4 series is a reprint. from 1928, or slightly later, while the 4d C2 issue dates from November 1935. The four original adverts (Ash. 1 to 4), and the later “No.0329” are all represented on the backs. In excellent condition, other than the 8d issue, which has a little Bd from previous mounting. 8CHATHAM & DISTRICT LIGHT RAILWAYS COMPANY 1d light brown named stage punch type TRAM TICKET by Bell Punch London). The advert on the back advertises 20ft x 200ft freehold plots of land for just £20! In VGC, apart from minor creasing at the bottom. The first part of this 15-mile system opened in 1902; it was closed down on 30/9/1930. (1)£65
9SOUTH EASTERN RAILWAY issued 3rd single from London Bridge to Blackheath, untitled on the front, but bearing the company’s conditions on the back. The ticket has a date of “MR 25”, but was issued before it became common practice to also include the year. (1)£55
10GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY AROUND SWANSEA AND NEATH: An all issued Pre-Grouping selection comprising Parly 3rd singles Glyn Neath to Quaker’s Yard, and Neath to Swansea, together with 3rd singles Swansea H.St. to Skewen and Neath, and severed halves from 2 x Dynevor (renamed 1/10/1904), Glyn Neath, Neath Abbey (closed 28/9/1936) and Pontardulais. (1927), Perkins* (10/1931), C.H. Pickup, St. George Omnibus Co., A.G. Summerskill*. (* = “Omnibus Ticket”, with company identified in pencil on back.). This is part of a tram and bus ticket collection which was started in 1923 and mainly amassed between 1927 and 1934. 28PORTSMOUTH CORPORATION TRAMWAYS. A selection of 8 geographical stage punch type TRAM TICKETS, believed to be mainly from c.1900. Five of the tickets are 1d white, two with an “Extra” portion and sections 1, 3 and 3 at the bottom, while the other three have a “Workpeople” section and a North End and Clarence Pier stage. There is also a 2d grey for use between Dockyard and South Parade Pier (with an “Extra” section), and two 3d blue issues – one a little earlier than the other and covering journeys between Cosham and Town Hall or Fratton Station, and Hilsea and Clarence Pier or Marmion Road. 48EDINBURGH & DISTRICT TRAMWAYS CO LTD. Two early 1d light blue roll type TRAM TICKETS issued respectively on Car Nos. 8 and 12. The company was incorporated in 1894 after Edinburgh Corporation had purchased the lines in the City from the Edinburgh Street Tramways Co and leased them to Dick, Kerr & Co Ltd. The Corporation re-assumed control of the system in 1919. (2)£120

The Eastern Counties Railway became a constituent of the Great Eastern Railway on 7th August 1862. (1)£60
51LONDON TRAMWAYS OMNIBUS Co Ltd 1d white geographical punch type HORSE BUS TICKET printed by Whiting valid between Elephant & Castle and Finsbury Pavement via London Bridge and Bank. Operating between the points noted on the ticket and connecting into the services of the North Metropolitan Tramways, It is not known when the company started operations, but it was referred to at a meeting of the London Tramways Co in June 1882. The company, with assets of 92 horses, 13 buses and stables in Walworth was acquired by the South London Tramways Co in December 1884. The ticket is loose mounted onto a page from an album and is in VGC. Very rare. (1)£300

56COOKE ROBINSON’S BUS SERVICES. An interesting selection of BUS TICKETS from this Potteries operator that became part of the Associated North Staffs Motor Bus Proprietors group in 1936. The tickets, 11 of which are by Williamson and one by Bell Punch London, are from 5 different series. The oldest, is the one by Bell Punch (endorsed “First issue” on the back). Reference to the company only appears on the back and, interestingly, a headquarters at Tunstall (ticket a little foxed). What appear to be the first Williamson prints, make reference on the backs to “improved char-a-bancs” and “Hamil Garage Burslem”. Two later, and somewhat similar prints bear the title Cooke, Robinson & Co. Ltd. One of the later series has “Tunstall-Longton” instead of “inwards” and “outwards” on the face, while the other series is full geographical. (12)£120

This indicates that the objective of the vast majority of people on this day was to cross the new Severn Bridge, and that the demand for singles from Severn Bridge to Sharpness exceeded the printed stock, necessitating the booking clerk to improvise. The short Highgate Hill system operated from 29/5/1884 to 23/8/1909. The ticket bears the title that was used between 1889 and 1892. The ticket, which is in excellent condition, is orange, with a red cross, and was used on the joint service with Leeds City Tramways. The Wakefield system opened on 15/8/1904, but became a subsidiary of the Yorkshire (West Riding) Electric Tramways Co. in the following year, though it was not until 1911 that the company was wound up. Both companies operated their own buses to convey passengers between their London terminus stations and the other London termini to the south of the city, until the advent of the tube which took away most of this cross-town traffic. 432CUNARD STEAMSHIP COMPANY LTD. 3rd class tie on BAGGAGE LABEL for use from the wharf at East Boston, Mass. on the SS Laconia, departing for Liverpool on 19/8/1913. The label is written out for a George S. Lewis of Shepherds Bush, London, and appears to have been for delivery to his home address via Uxbridge Road Station, as the ‘landing’ portion is not completed. The Laconia – an 18,000 ton vessel – entered service in 1912 but was torpedoed and sunk off the Irish coast on 25/2/1917, with the loss of 12 lives – an act which led to the USA entering WW1. Records show that the ship arrived in Boston from Liverpool on 13/8/1913, so the label would have been for its return journey. (1)£40

Llanelly District Traction, Trent, Eastern National and Hants & Dorset noted amongst the issued examples, plus 7 from Belfast City Trams. 495A BIT OF EVERYTHING! – Pre-Nationalisation and BR whole Edmondsons, minor and preserved railways, large card, paper (including Pre-Grouping), platform tickets, severed halves, CDRJC, Scottish bus (used and unused), and other miscellaneous paperwork (parcel stamps, labels, letters). In normal circumstances many of these would be found in smaller lots. However, a large proportion – though certainly not all – have been previously mounted with Sellotape, sometimes on the fronts of the tickets. Many therefore bear marks, some noticeable, some not so. The BR Edmondsons include issues from closed stations around Edinburgh, the Fife Coast, Waverley line, and GNofS. There is also a damaged ticket for a visit of the Queen to Princes St. Station, Edinburgh on 23/6/1953 (printed date of 25/61952 overstamped). (Qty)£15
