3WOLVERTON & STONY STRATFORD DISTRICT NEW TRAMWAYS CO. LTD unclipped 2d white punch type STEAM TRAM TICKET for use between Wolverton Station and Stony Stratford, and in VGC. This system, which covered a distance of almost 5 miles, operated from 27/5/1887 to 3/5/1926. (1)£240
4MANCHESTER CARRIAGE & TRAMWAYS COMPANY. An 1881 2d black on white Prepaid PARCEL STAMP signed “JW Betteny” with facsimile signature. Unused, no gum. This was a standard gauge horse tramway system which opened in May 1877. Lines were taken over by Salford Corporation in May 1901 and the company ceased operations on its other lines by March 1903 which were taken over by Manchester Corporation and Oldham Corporation. 16LONDON INDEPENDENT BUS OPERATORS: A selection of 4 named and 6 numerical stage punch type BUS TICKETS from such diverse companies as Ambassador Bus Co. Ltd, City Motor Omnibus Co. (“Omnibus Ticket”, with advert for City New Empress Saloons from Kentish Town to Southend on back), Claremont Omnibus (named stage), Empire (named stage), The Orange Service (Haywood & Nowell Ltd. – named stage) Overland Omnibuses, Renown Traction Company (fareboard – Service 15A), Standard (“Omnibus Ticket”, with company identified in pencil on back.), United Omnibus Co. Ltd., and Westminster Omnibus Co. Ltd. This is from the last part of a tram and bus ticket collection which was started in 1923 and mainly amassed between 1927 and 1934. The tickets are generally in good and sometimes VG condition, but a number have excess paper and slight Bd from previous mounting. See also lots identified elsewhere in this auction. (10)£45

The lot also includes 2 issued whole and 2 thin card (1 used) from the ROTHER VALLEY RAILWAY, an issued SOUTHERN RAILWAY single from Wittersham Road and 4 audits, an issued BR single from Rolvenden, 5 audits and a BLS tour ticket. There are also 2 K&ES, 3 RV, and 1 BR severed halves. (53wh 6hlf)£170
18CENTRAL BUS SERVICE: A collection of 12 punch type BUS TICKETS from this Potteries operator. What appear to be the earliest tickets are 1½d and 2d “Inwards / Outwards” prints by Keates of Hanley, with “223 Campbell Rd. Tel. 1893” under the operator’s name and blank backs. These were followed by 5 numbered stage issues showing “Prop: J. Hawthorn” instead the Campbell Rd. information – two by Keates and 3 by Williamson – and “Central” adverts on the backs. The lot also includes 5 numbered stage issues by Bell Punch, with the fares overprinted rather than in the text, and “1443” imprints. This dates them as c.1929. Central was absorbed by PMT in 1934. 19TENBURY WELLS: A collection of issued tickets covering journeys from and to this small Worcestershire town, comprising: GWR – a pre-grouping 3rd single from Wyre Forest, pre-nat. 3rd singles to Birmingham S.H., Great Malvern (buff), and Kidderminster, and a blank 3rd single from Reading; GW&LMS Rys Joint – buff 3rd singles to and from Woofferton; LM&SR – a 3rd Free Pass to Kyle of Lochalsh, issued in 1934. 23EDINBURGH & DISTRICT TRAMWAYS CO LTD. Early 1d light blue roll type TRAM TICKET issued on Car No.98, together with a white 2d “Local Ticket” without car identification. The company was incorporated in 1894 after Edinburgh Corporation had purchased the lines in the City from the Edinburgh Street Tramways Co and leased them to Dick, Kerr & Co Ltd. The Corporation re-assumed control of the system in 1919. (2)£65

A selection of 18 unused BUS TICKETS from Route BK (London – Hitchin – Bedford – Rushden – Kettering), 9 of which are for specific journeys, the others being Duplex “fareboard” issues with a fold over detachable portion to be retained by the conductor (one ticket is displayed showing both sides). The tickets bear Bell Punch imprints between C1608 and D6970, which dates them as being printed from late 1935 to 1939. The tickets were withdrawn in early 1942 when the route became 203. (18) £20

68VANGUARD MOTOR BUS Co. Ltd. Geographical (2) and numerical stage (1) punch type BUS TICKETS. The geographical tickets are for their № 6 and № 7 services. The London Motor Omnibus Company was launched in 1905 with the first bus running from Brondesbury – Waterloo in April that year. In April 1907 the company was amalgamated with London & District, Motor Omnibus and London & Provincial companies to form the Vanguard Motor Bus Co. Due to severe financial difficulties, working agreements were reached with LGOC in March 1908 and in July 1908 the company was absorbed by the LGOC. 138THE HARTLEPOOL ELECTRIC TRAMWAYS 2d green punch type TRAM TICKET, with diagonal black lines, available for the journey between Seaton Carew and Church Street. In excellent condition, but with a slight fade on the top edge. The company was authorised to rebuild the defunct 3’ 6” gauge Hartlepool Steam Tramways using overhead electric power and was opened on 19th May 1896, finally reaching nearly 7 miles in length. West Hartlepool Corporation took over the system in August 1912.  This finally succumbed to trolleybus replacement when the Seaton Carew line closed on 25th March 1927.  A rare example. (1)£90

SMEDLER “Hanley & Newcastle Bus Service (via Basford)” – all by Keates of Hanley – together with 9 tickets of various types and ages from J.T. STANIER & CO. The oldest tickets have “inwards / Outwards” sections and comprise 1½d and 3d issues by Bell Punch London with the operator’s name at the top and his own advertisements on the backs (one for char-a-bancs), and 1d, 2½d and 3d issues by Williamson, with the name printed vertically in the centre portion of the ticket (the latter two are longer, and possibly a little earlier than the 1d ticket). There are also 1d, 1½d and 2½d numbered stage issues by Bell Punch with 1927/8 imprints and an Exchange Ticket with a 1470 reference. This dates the ticket as printed in 1929, the year that the company, which was based in Newchapel, is believed to have passed to the “Associated North Staffs” empire. (14)£180

300EASTERN COUNTIES RAILWAY: An untitled 2d single Broxbourne to Duddingston. Similar tickets – to three destinations, none of which were opened, or at least with names in that format – were found at Broxbourne in the 1950s. Duddingston was possibly the site of an intended station on the St. Ives to March line (the other two could have been intended names on the Cambridge to St. Ives line). The tickets all carry dates between 1906 and 1914 – this one has "OC 31 14" on the front and "SP 18 12" on the back – the reason possibly being that the old “rediscovered” stock was used for testing the dating press at the start of each day. ECR tickets printed in this style are certainly known. (1)£10
