11ISLE OF WIGHT CENTRAL RAILWAY 3rd Class Revised Fare single from St. Lawrence to Ventnor Town, issued on 18/4/1923 and in excellent condition. St. Lawrence became a halt in 1927; Ventnor Town was renamed on 9/7/1923. Both stations closed on 15/9/1952. (1)£240

These prints, which are from the first post-geographical series and date from c.1919, just show the operator’s name and address, and that timetables can be obtained from the conductors, with fares overprinted in red block numerals. 17LNER: A collection of 50 issued and 64 audit whole. The issued tickets include odd closed stations, such as Barkston and Fitzwilliam Halt. There are a number of closed stations in the audit tickets, a few of which are lightly overstamped “Specimen”. Condition generally good / VG, with perhaps half a dozen creased or soiled. (114)£85

50LAMBOURN VALLEY RAILWAY issued blank Through Ticket for Dog, Bicycle, &c. from Lambourn, made out to Oxford, and dated 2/8/1899. The LVR opened on 2/4/1898 and was purchased by the GWR on 1/7/1905. The ticket is numbered 068, indicating that an average of just 1 ticket of this type was issued each week during the first 16 months of operation. (1)£140

The majority of the issued tickets are from open stations – although Gilling noted – with duplication of origins, though not of individual prints. Several closed stations noted in the audits. 246THE ABERDEEN DISTRICT TRAMWAYS COMPANY folding leatherette “Composition Ticket” issued to a Mr J.G. Robertson enabling him to make journeys by HORSE TRAM between Market Street and Ashley Road from 28th August to 27th November 1896. Seven conditions are printed inside the ticket, one of which states that it “must be delivered up on the day of expiry”, indicating that it is fortunate to have survived. The outside is coloured green, with the initials “A.D.T.” in gold coloured lettering. The company opened its first line on 31/8/1874. It was taken over by Aberdeen Corporation on 27/8/1898 and subsequently electrified. (1)£240

301MIDLAND RAILWAY: An untitled 1st Excursion ticket from Leicester to Birmingham, pre-dated 12/12/1850, with “DEC.12” also applied by hand stamp along the left edge. At that time Leicester station was in Campbell Street, while the Birmingham terminus was at Lawley Street (closed 1/5/1851). An advertisement in the “Derby Mercury” (copy with ticket) shows that the excursion ran in connection with “The Birmingham and Midland Counties Exhibition of Cattle, Sheep, Pigs, and Poultry”. It would appear that Leicester passengers travelled via Ashby to Burton, where the carriages were attached to a separate portion from Nottingham and Derby. The ticket has a little Bd from previous mounting, but this should not deter interest in this extremely rare example. (1)£1250

The text shows that it was issued at the Red Cap Office. It is numbered “0000” and faded at the edges indicating that the ticket had been in the rack for some time. 2nd Class facilities on the Midland itself had been withdrawn some 41 years earlier. Mainly dated blank cards from the mid-1960s, which have been cancelled, presumably due to a change in Forces requirements, the majority having been endorsed as such on the faces either in writing or rubber stamp. There are a few without any endorsement, plus a number of undated examples. Others have paper on the backs, which appears to be from being attached to relevant paperwork when returned to the audit office.
