166THE ABERDEEN DISTRICT TRAMWAYS COMPANY folding leatherette “Composition Ticket” issued to a Mr William Westland enabling him to make journeys by HORSE TRAM between Market Street and Erskine Street from 11th April to 10th July 1895. Seven conditions are printed inside the ticket, one of which states that it “must be delivered up on the day of expiry”, indicating that it is fortunate to have survived. This ticket is similar to the one offered in our April auction, but the outside cover is brown rather than green. Additionally, the conditions are laid out slightly differently, while the seventh one does not contain the wording “should the service be interrupted or discontinued owing to repair or renewal of the tramways lines or snowstorm or any other reason”. It would appear that an incident occurred in the 15 months between the issue of this ticket and August 1896 which lead to the company adding this disclaimer. The tramway opened its first line on 31/8/1874. It was taken over by Aberdeen Corporation on 27/8/1898 and subsequently electrified. The ticket has a slight nick in the fold, but otherwise is in good condition. (1)£170
