2NORTH BRITISH RAILWAY 3rd single Fort Augustus to Aberchalder, dated 31/10/1911 and in VGC. The Fort Augustus punch impression “FA” is visible on the back. Both stations closed on 1/11/1911, but were subsequently re-opened on 1/8/1913. Final closure took place on 1/12/1933. This ticket was therefore issued on the last day of operation prior to the first closure. (1)£210
3READING TRAMWAYS COMPANY LIMITED 2d punch type HORSE TRAM TICKET for use between Barracks and Early. This system, which extended to just 2.37 miles, opened on 5/4/1879, and was taken over by the Corporation on 1/11/1901. (1)£30

6LONDON STREET TRAMWAYS: A 1¾” x 3½” thin card HORSE TRAM TICKET available for a 2d single journey between North London Railway Station Camden Road & Highgate Archway Tavern Upper Holloway. The ticket has an advertisement for Epps’s Cocoa on the side with the journey details, while on the back there is a coloured lithograph of a child with some geese, below which are the conditions of travel. Research into tickets of this type indicates that they date from 1876, and that the purpose of the lithographs may have been to encourage people to keep their tickets rather than discard them. (1)N/S

This station, which was officially known as Welwyn Garden City Halt, was situated on the Hatfield to Dunstable branch and opened on 1st September 1920, at which date all tickets would have been Revised Fare prints. The ink alteration to the fare from 10½d to 7½d reflects the fare reduction of 1/1/1923. This station closed on 20/9/1926 and was replaced by a new one on the main line. A rare example. (1)£230

This station was situated on the Tottenham & Hampstead Joint Railway (MR / GER; later LM&SR / LNER) and issued tickets with that title in pre-nationalisation days, albeit produced by the LNER. Following nationalisation it was transferred to the Eastern Region of British Railways. Initially, tickets were ordered from the former LNER printing works, many, like this example, being produced with that company’s title. In excellent condition. (1)£25

480BR EDMONDSONS: A shoebox containing almost 3,000 tickets: Approx. 1,000 are withdrawn Forces Duty blank card issues mainly dated in the mid-1960s, which have been cancelled, presumably due to a change in Forces requirements, the majority having been endorsed as such on the faces. There are a few without any endorsement, plus a number of undated examples. Others have paper on the backs, which appears to be from being attached to relevant paperwork when returned to the audit office. Closed stations noted. Of the remainder approx. 525 are heavily duplicated withdrawn stock from Hull Corporation Pier, 125 from Swanage Railway excursions (duplicated), and 850 from BR(W) stations, again withdrawn stock with some prints heavily duplicated. Origins include Barnstaple Junction, Barry line stations, Exeter stations, Frome, Gloucester, Oxford, Paddington, Stapleton Road, and Weston-super-Mare. A number of tickets are to closed stations, such as those on the West Somerset line. The lot also includes around 400, mainly issued tickets from open stations in various parts of the country. A good number are from London termini and adjacent suburban stations, invariably issued, while there are also issued tickets from the Paignton / Plymouth area, Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Exchange (the latter with Bd). Audit tickets in reasonable numbers are from the closed stations at Seacombe, Seaton, Sidmouth, and Thurstaston. Transitional prints noted.
