2NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY issued 3rd single Rillington to Kirkham Abbey. The face of the ticket is in good condition, although a large cancellation clip at the top obscures part of the issuing station name. The back has excess paper from previous mounting, which should be removable with care, but there is a little Bd in the area of the date that makes the full detail unreadable. Nevertheless, the ticket should still be of particular interest to collectors, as regular passenger services were withdrawn from both stations on 22/9/1930. (1)£85

This 4½ mile tramway, which despite its title did not serve Brighton, opened with steam traction on 3/7/1884, but was using horses by the time it closed on 6/6/1913. (1)£170

This 3½-mile system – Cornwall’s only tramway – operated between 7/11/1902 and 29/9/1927. (1)£40
17CITY & SOUTH LONDON RAILWAY: Six Workman singles (not available after 8am) issued in 1908, comprising Bank (Subway) to Kennington (small area of Bd), Borough to King’s Cross and St. Pancras, Kennington to Bank, Old Street to Euston (with black “U” overprint), Oval to Borough, and Stockwell to Moorgate St. The tickets bear the different destination colours in use during this period. 31END OF COLLECTION MISCELLANY: A Midland Railway 5” x 3½” paper 3rd Class Service Pass issued to a Mr Walker for use between St. Pancras and Chiltern Green in August 1914 (slight edge damage). We know that his full name was George Albert Walker as two pieces of accompanying correspondence show him as being a Vanman at St. Pancras. Two booklets of Continental coupons issued in the 1930s – one a “Brussels Exhibition Weekend Ticket” – were presumably issued to his son, George Edmund Walker, who was born in 1906. The lot also includes two Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway coupon tickets and, from more recent times, 98 Edmondsons, most of which are for railtours from 1951 to the early 1970s – though mainly from the earlier period (with duplication). A small number of preservation line tickets are included as well as 2 from pre-nationalisation days. A few miscellaneous non-Edmondsons complete the lot. (Qty)£120

34EAST & WEST JUNCTION RAILWAY type E11 LUGGAGE LABEL From Ettington to Willesden. The first section of line opened in January 1871 and was extended in July 1873 to include Ettington. However, due to a dire financial situation a receiver was appointed in July 1877 and traffic was suspended. The line reopened in 1885 amalgamated with the Stratford-Upon-Avon Towcester & Midland Junction Railway, hence this label can be dated to the period 1873 to 1877. Slight foxing, very good generally. 39SOUTHERN RAILWAY – CUNARD WHITE STAR LTD. A 3rd single from Southampton West or Terminus (for Docks) to Waterloo issued in connection with the arrival of that company’s liner MV Britannic, dated 8/6/1935, together with a similar 3rd Child single issued in connection with the arrival of MV Georgie, dated 23/6/1935. Both ships were built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, and at the time that the tickets were issued shared duties on Cunard’s Southampton to New York service. Agency code 263 appears on both tickets, and there are small “cancelled” stamps on the backs. (2)£45
40GREAT EASTERN RAILWAY; Issued whole comprising a 2nd single from Hackney Downs, 3rd singles from Hoe Street, and Manor Park, a 2nd return from Hackney Downs, and 3rd returns from Hackney Downs and Liverpool St. ES, together with 9 severed halves – including returns halves from Carlton Col(ville) and a P&O Co’s Steamer lying in the River Thames off Tilbury (1st Class Passengers Friends Ticket on P&O Special Train). The lot also includes LNER adult and child 3rd singles from Felixstowe Town to Felixstowe Beach (the latter trans), a trans. 3rd single from Liverpool Street CLR, a folding mail cart single from Felixstowe Beach (to 100 miles), and a Motor Ferry Boat child single from Harwich Pier to Felixstowe Pier, plus 4 severed halves – all from 1925. Ingram, Esq., Director of Finance Statistics, available between “any Station and any Station” for the year 1921, together with a 5” x 3½” folding leatherette Commercial Traveller’s Luggage and Sample Ticket on thicker card, issued to Mr Andrew Johnston of Messrs Millar, Boyd & Reid until 31/12/1904, allowing him to carry 15 cwt of materials when travelling on a 1st Class ticket. Millar, Boyd & Reid were wholesale warehousemen with premises at 5 to 11 Callendar Street, Belfast. (2)£20

Benfieldside was renamed Consett on 1/1/1882, became Consett & Blackhill on 1/1/1885, and Blackhill on 1/5/1896. The line from Tow Law to Blackhill closed to passenger services on 1/5/1939. Tow Law closed on 11/6/1956. The ticket is believed to be from the NER’s “Darlington Section”, which administered former Stockton & Darlington lines for some 10 years after that company’s absorption. The printing of tickets almost certainly continued on S&D presses, the style being quite different from those printed at York. Audit codes may also be unique to former S&D lines. (1)£45

The line was converted to standard gauge in September 1862 and merged with the Dorset Central Railway to form the Somerset & Dorset Railway. Banwell was renamed Worle in August 1869. 325LNER T3C PLATFORM TICKET from Tilbury Riverside. This station was originally opened by the LT&SR, passing subsequently to the MR and later LM&SR. It was never owned by the LNER. However, following nationalisation it was transferred to the Eastern Region of British Railways. Catcliffe was a Sheffield District Railway station which originally stocked LD&ECR tickets. A joint MR / LD&ECR arrangement for working a Sheffield to Mansfield service was introduced in 07/1903, from which time the station was stocked with Midland tickets. 391SOUTHERN RAILWAY: A 3¼” x 2½” folding leatherette “All Stations 1st Class Free Pass for 1947-48,” issued to Mr A. Reid of The Railway Executive. The format of the ticket depicts some of the uncertainties during the transitional period between private ownership and nationalisation. While “All Stations” is embossed on the outside of the ticket, the inside caters for other eventualities, with the detail having to be written below an “Available between” section. The reference to 1947 indicates that such tickets were issued to cover both years, although the (printed) expiry date in this case was 31/12/1948. The conditions have E.J. Missenden as General Manager, but this is overstamped “John Elliot”. Elliott became Acting GM in the latter part of 1947 when Missenden was appointed Chairman of the Railway Executive. (1)£65

The respective pages contain covers (and conditions) from King’s Cross (2; 1 missing), Aldersgate Street (3), “Country non-deposit; RCH King’s Cross and north of Peterborough” (3), West of King’s Cross (5), “King’s Cross or Holloway; Country with deposit” (3), “Aldersgate, B & B St.; GPO – RCH” (2), “London and stations on the Norfolk Coast” (2), and B & B St. Tube” (3). There are also 5 pages containing 11 covers without endorsement, plus a page with 7 different types of conditions with the secretary shown as E.H. Burrows. Burrows replaced Latta as secretary c.1902. Each card bears a header with brief pre-printed notes about the specific types, while some pages have been endorsed with dates of issue, etc. The whole Edmondsons include singles from the Richmond and Wimbledon lines, Rail Motor, various types of returns, such as ordinary, Monthly, Privilege, Forces Leave, Cheap Day, Excursion, Weekend, and Special Arrangement, and issues for Boat Trains / Shipping Services. A mixture of issued and audit, with some less common types noted, such as Convalescent Home, Races, Visit to Evacuees, Conducted Day Tour (with Salter’s Steamers), and ones including admission to Charlton Athletic FC, Chessington Zoo, and Brooklands Motor Track. The thin card tickets are for Rail Motor services in the Wimbledon area and West Country. The half tickets are mounted by type and include a few transitional prints.
