A collection of 15 GNR 1st class singles collected as evidence in a criminal case against a London Missionary, John Scholfield of Shadwell, East London, in 1866, accused of defrauding the railway by skilfully altering pre-printed tickets between London and the Leeds area, including altering “Hornsey” to “Holbeck”. One of the tickets (6467) is the one upon which the criminal charge was made, while some unaltered examples were found in the home of the accused. Many have pin holes from attachment to reports etc and cancellation holes. Copies of newspaper reports and an article by Brian Pask published in the TTS Journal during 2008 are included, which explains the various tickets and alterations. (15)£440

498LPTB/LT (BUSES) PROOF FAREBOARD GEOGRAPHICAL BUS TICKETS. A carton containing in excess of 1,000 printer’s proofs for LPTB services 21 to 31 from the July 1933 to late 1940 period. Most fronts and backs are printed on separate card, although a few complete examples may appear. The fronts do not usually have the large fare value overprint, the value appearing in the text on both fronts and backs of each ticket, which is printed on the appropriate colour card for its value. Almost all have the date of approval by LPTB at the top in ink; a few are also overstamped “cancelled.” Not all changes may be represented on each route and, in some cases, only the side of the ticket with changes appears.
