49THE WHITBURN COAL Co Ltd circular BRASS RAILWAY PASS stamped with the serial number “1219.” 2” diameter with hole for attaching to a chain. Leaving the NER at Westoe, South Shields in May 1879, the line went to Marsden and served two intermediate stations. On 19/3/1888 the line was opened to the public. In 1891 the Whitburn company was bought by the Harton Coal Co and subsequently the National Coal Board on 1st January 1947. This was the first public railway line in the UK to be Nationalised.
