This indicates that the objective of the vast majority of people on this day was to cross the new Severn Bridge, and that the demand for singles from Severn Bridge to Sharpness exceeded the printed stock, necessitating the booking clerk to improvise. The company was authorised to rebuild the defunct 3’ 6” gauge Hartlepool Steam Tramways using overhead electric power and was opened on 19th May 1896 finally reaching nearly 7 miles in length. West Hartlepool Corporation took over the system in August 1912. The system finally succumbed to trolleybus replacement when the Seaton Carew line closed on 25th March 1927.
